Fall 2001Publicity - E. Martin
On May 4-5, 2001 I attended the ACS workshop "The Elements of Communication - Becoming a PR Catalyst for Chemistry" at the Belmont Conference Center in Baltimore, MD. This was the first year this program was offered to division PR chairs and most of the topics were geared towards media outreach for local sections. I was, however, able to meet and talk with PR chairs from other divisions and participate in positive brainstorming sessions with them and the ACS Office of Communications representatives.
Team Pub currently consists of Dennis Smith (Assistant Secretary) and our newest addition, Hiep Ly (Xerox Corp.). We are always looking for more members, so please pass the word!
Action items since the last meeting:
· Unilever Award announcement in C and E News (July 2nd issue - page 39)
· Workshop announcements on electronic distribution list and C and E News (July 16th issue, page 38)
· Industrial Sponsors Award announcement in C and E News (August 20th issue - page 68)
· C and E News article on the 50th Anniversary of the POLY Division (in progress as of August 1)
· Event updates (awards, symposia, etc.) have been maintained on the electronic distribution list and web site
· Posters were provided for the Industrial Sponsors reception and symposium, Unilever symposium and Nobel Laureate symposium at this meeting
· Working with the Membership Committee to recruit new members and advertise receptions and symposia at this meeting (Sunday night POLY poster session)
New action items:
· Begin monthly teleconferences
· As mentioned in the report from San Diego - Team Pub will work to outreach POLY news/events to universities, industry, and local sections (esp. the contacts I made at the PR workshop)
Several of you have contacted me directly in order to request Team Pubs assistance in the publicity of your event(s) for this meeting - I encourage everyone else to do the same in the future!

Spring 2001
Publicity - E. Martin
At the Washington, D.C. meeting last August, Team Pub held a strong presence along with the membership committee at the POLY poster session on Sunday evening. In fact, we were successful in surpassing the 2000 x 2000 goal in recruiting members! Both committees will be present again in San Diego at the POLY poster session.
Since the last meeting, Team Pub has distributed announcements for awards and workshops, and maintained event updates to the electrinic distribution list and web site. E-advertising, web updates, and posters were provided for the POLY Millennial and Herman Mark Awards. Posters for the 50th Anniversary symposia and POLY award reception were supplied for this meeting.
Team Pub currently consists of Jerrold Miller (Bridgestone-Firestone) and Dennis Smith (Assistant Secretary). We are looking for more members, so please refer any individuals whom you think would like to participate in spreading the word about POLY.
The following are goals of Team Pub for the year 2001:
· Continue to work with the membership committee on recruiting new members at meetings.
· Continue the work with the membership committee on establishing contact with other professional organizations. Whereas membership will focus on recruiting members of these societies who are not already members of POLY, Team Pub will work on advertising POLY events at various other polymer-related conferences (i.e. Waterborne, Radtech, MRS, etc).
· Work with membership in targeting local sections once again, Team Pub will focus on advertising POLY sponsored symposia, workshops, etc.
· Continue the effort to establish web links with graduate schools, industry, professional organizations
· I would like to see more of a presence of POLY advertising/press releases in ACS publications
· I would like to see more interaction with our industrial sponsors start working together with the industrial sponsors committee so that these companies will begin to regularly advertise our symposia and workshops
· I will be attending the ACS workshop "How to be a PR Catalyst for Chemistry" May 4-6 in Baltimore, MD
Finally, I would just like to remind you that Team Pub is here to serve POLY. Do not hesitate to allow us to assist you in advertising your workshops, symposia, awards, etc! We are YOUR committee!

Publicity - D. Smith
Since the last Executive Committee meeting, the POLY Publicity Committee has achieved at least two C&EN publications with two pending, distributed announcements for awards and workshops, maintained the semi-monthly sponsored programs e-distributed update, and supplied posters publicizing membership and awards at this meeting.
Publicity is currently approached in four ways; by (1) electronic distribution to the POLY list, (2) posting on our web site, (3) submission to Michele Gandy for publication in C&EN, and (4) posters and flyers at national meetings.
Three people have joined the publicity committee since the last meeting. Jerrold Miller (Bridgestone/Firestone), Andrea Bowen (P&G), and Erica Martin (Morton Powder Coatings). Please join me in welcoming these new POLY volunteers as we expand this important committee. The current and future focus of "Team Pub" involves web-based outreach for POLY programs and membership.
Selected publicity activities:
- Paul J. Flory Award winner, e-distributed, posted, published in C&EN 3/20/00 and posters brought.

The Publicity Committee has carried out the above
activities at no cost to the Division.
The "Sparkle Workshop" was very informative. The
Division should try to take advantage of the ACS Public
Outreach programs in order to disseminate information in a
more efficient manner and take advantage of ACS local/regional
Divisions for public relations activities.
