Spring 2002
International Relations R. Ottenbrite
I represented the Polymer Division at the International Macro-Millenium Meeting held September 4-7, 2001 in Monpellier, France and the International Symposium on Polymers in Clinical Studies, held January 5-7, 2002, in Cardiff, Whales. The Polymer Division banner was displayed and information with respect to membership was displaced and distributed. Direct interactions with the Europen Polymer Federation has been less during the last few years as their focus has been on topic specific IUPAC meetings and great inter-European country meetings fostered by the European community.

INTERNATIONAL CHEMISTRY CELEBRATION 1999
The ACS in conjunction with Chemical Societies around the world will be
conducting a celebration of Chemistry in 1999 - The name being used is
-- International Chemistry Celebration (IChC). In addition, the
National Science Foundation has designated 1999 as the "International
Year of Chemistry".
Pursuant to this, the ACS Board of Directors has appointed an ad hoc
Committee chaired by Helen Free to arrange the events. I serve on this
Committee. In previous meeting the committee agreed upon WATER
(chemistry, quality, testing, analysis) as the global theme that all
countries could participate in with emphasis on interactive experiences
directed to school age children. A colorful, entertaining, cartoon-like
brochure on water chemistry (available for translation into many
languages) with accompanying test strips, has been developed to provide
a global connection for the World's young "scientists."
At the Las Vegas meeting, the committee discussed the feasibility of a
complementary cultural, historical landmark project that might provide
adult chemistry practitioners with an International Chemistry
Celebration theme with which they could identify. There was general
agreement among the Committee that -- from the contributions most easily
understood by the general public, the contributions of POLYMER Chemistry
best demonstrate the chemist's creative ability to manipulate matter.
It is proposed that a series of events be held as the millennium
approaches in individual nations across the globe, acknowledging the
historical impact of POLYMERS on the quality of human life.
Scarcely any nation would not have some location, some structure, some
company, some research facility, some manufacturing unit, some
achievement within its borders that capsulizes the historic
"Landmarkable" best of its POLYMER enterprises. A state-of-the-art PVC
plant, an 18th century linen mill, a Research Institute or University
laboratory, a unique hybrid rubber tree plantation, the worlds largest
caprolactam manufactory, a plastic soda bottle plant could all qualify
if the chemical society of that nation so stipulates.
A subcommittee composed of Ned Heindel (ndh0@lehigh.edu), James Long
(jlong@oregon.uoregon.edu) and myself has been formed to further develop
this idea. I solicit your input and ideas. Is this a good idea and
worth pursuing? Should we broaden or narrow the area? If we decide to
go ahead, how should we recognize the designated sites? Do you have any
suggestions as to sites in the USA?
All comments and suggestions may be directed to me, or any other member
of the committee.
