President's Message: Fosong Wang

As the Council President of PPF and the Chairman of the Organizing Committee of Sixth Pacific Polymer Conference (PPC-6), it is my great pleasure to welcome all the participants of PPC-6 coming from the Pacific Basin area and other countries all over the world.

Organizing the PPC is the most important part of the activities of PPF. We've successfully held five PPC's since the establishment of PPF in 1987.  From January 1998, I was elected the PPF Council President, and I must say that I feel things went on smoothly.  Thanks to all the thrust and cooperation from every dear member of PPF Council.

During our council meeting at Cold Coast of Australia last year on 15. July, we've discussed the detailed preparation works of the imminent PPC-6 and also PPC-7 which will be held in Mexico in 2001. The time and venue of PPC-8 has also been conceded in Thailand in 2003. At the same time, the Council has appointed three committee chairmen, i.e. T. Kajiyama for the Constitution Committee, G.A. George for the Membership Committee and S.C. Kim for the Awards Committee.

Finally, I sincerely hope that PPC's shall have great achievements and a grand future in the coming Century.

Sincerely Yours

Fosong Wang, President of PPF

Guests: A. Abe, X.G. Jin, CY. Kim, S. Nakahama, R. Ottenbrite, K. Shida, M. Xu

Welcoming Remarks

F.S. Wang, President of PPF Council, welcomed all the attendees and guests of the meeting and outlined the agenda. The Council members and guests then introduced themselves in turns. The minutes of the previous PPF Council Meeting, which was shown in PPF Newsletter No. 8, as well as the Second Circular of PPC-6 were distributed.

Approval of Minutes: The minutes prepared by S.C. Kim of the previous PPF Council Meeting which was held on October 27, 1997, in Kyongju, Korea was approved with a few corrections.

Report on PPC-6: F. S. Wang and M. Xu reported the progress in organizing PPC-6 in Guangzhou, China, December 7-12.  Many valuable suggestions were raised during the discussion, e.g. the poster presentation was emphasized by some Council Members.

Membership: G.A. George reported that the Mexican Polymer Society has submitted an application for the PPF membership.

There was much discussion on that application, as the Division of Polymers of the Mexican Academy of Material Science is the current member from Mexico. T. Ogawa discussed the polymer community in Mexico and the structure and relationship among three polymer-related societies there. It was finally concluded that the Mexican Polymer Society may replace the Division of Polymer of the Mexican Academy of Material Science as a new PPF member. However, the Polymer Division shall require the change in written form for its formal approval.

Appointments of New Committee Chairmen: T. Kajiyama was appointed as the Chairman of the Constitution Committee, G.A. George, the Membership Committee and S.C. Kim, the Awards Committee.

PPC-7 and PPC-8 T. Ogawa noted that PPC-7 would be held either at the end of November or at the beginning of December, 2001 in the city of Oaxaca, Mexico.  The conference will be organized by the Mexican Polymer Society, the Division of Polymeric Materials of the Mexican Academy of Material Science and the Division of Polymer Chemistry of Mexican Chemistry Society. He introduced Oaxaca as a quiet town which is rich in Spanish colonial architecture and would be easily reached from Mexico City.

S. Tantayanon expressed the interests of the Polymer Society of Thailand in organizing PPC-8 in Bangkok, Thailand in December, 2003. This suggestion was supported by many members including H. Chan, from Singapore, and was uniformly agreed..

C.Y. Kim suggested that the venues for conferences following PPC-8 should return to the founding member countries.

Next Council Meeting: The next Council Meeting would be held in Guangzhou during PPC-6.

Closing

F.S. Wang adjourned the meeting at 17:00 (Prepared by M Jiang)

6th PACIFIC POLYMER CONFERENCE (PPC-6), December 7 -11, 1999                  Guangzhou, China

7th Polymer Conference (PPC-7), December 4-9, 2001

Oaxaca, Mexico.

The Seventh Pacific Polymer Conference will be held on December 4-9, 2001 in the City of Oaxaca, a southern state on the Pacific Coast of the Mexican Republic.  The Conference will be organized by the Mexican Polymer Society under the auspices of the Pacific Polymer Federation.  The Conference will include almost every field of polymer science and technology with plenary and invited lectures together with oral and poster presentations, and we aim to have a conference of the highest scientific level with the most up to date information on polymer science and technology of the 21st Century.

The City of Oaxaca is a quiet town with Spanish colonial architecture and can be reached by a 40 minute flight from Mexico City. Oaxaca has easy access to famous prehispanic ruins, such as Monte Alban and Mitla, and also some Pacific Coast resorts, such as Huatulco, where one can enjoy unspoiled beaches as well as golfing and deep sea fishing.  The climate of the City of Oaxaca is mild in December, with dry weather, lots of sunshine (about 25-30°C daytime) but very comfortable in night (10-15°C).

Although the Conference is of the Pacific Basin countries, participants from other regions are also very welcome.  A Second circular will be issued at the beginning of 2000.
