President's Message: Fosong Wang

Pacific Polymer Federation, PPF, has been growing up in the past ten years since its foundation in 1987.  PPF is now composed of 17 member organizations, which are the most active and important polymer oriented societies or organizations in the Pacific Basin.  The objective of PPF is to encourage and facilitate the interaction between our member organizations and the scientific exchange among polymer scientists and engineers in the Pacific region.  All the activities of PPF have demonstrated its important role, not only in the science aspects, but also in promoting the mutual understanding and friendship among peoples.

The prime function of PPF is to organize Pacific Polymer Conference, PPC, in sequence of every two years.  We have already five PPC's since 1989 in Maui (USA), Otzu (Japan), Gold Coast (Australia), Kauai (USA) and Kyongju (Korea), respectively.  The 6th PPC is to be organized by Polymer Division, Chinese Chemical Society in December, 1999 in Guangzhou, China.  We are very pleased to note that due to the effort of all the member organizations, PPC is now well known as one of the important events for world polymer community.

As the president of the Council of PPF I sincerely welcome you to attend the 6th Pacific Polymer Conference, an international forum for communication and discussion of new ideas and results and perspective for polymer science and technology on the Eve of the New Century.

Sincerely Yours

Fosong Wang, President of PPF

Constitutions Committee: A. Abe, Chairman, reported that the final revised version of the Constitution of PPF was written in the PPF Newsletter No. 7.

Awards Committee: S.C. Kim,  Chairman, had nothing to report.

Report on PPC-5: S.C. Kim (Secretary General, PPC-5) reported that the number of pre-registered participants were 820 from 23 countries and 587 abstracts were received which included 5 plenary lectures, 250 oral presentations and 330 poster presentations.  The detail of the pre-registration and abstract submission statistics appeared in the last page, of PPF Newsletter No. 7.

PPF Newsletter No. 7: S.C. Kim explained the contents of PPF Newsletter No. 7. The Newsletter had two articles from O.. Vogl, the first president of PPF and T. Saegusa, the second president of PPF who coincidentally had their 70th birthday one week before (Oct. 18 for Saegusa) and one week after (Nov. 6 for Vogl) the PPC-5 period.  The Newsletter also listed the addresses of the Council Members.

PPC-6: F.Wang mentioned that he was impressed about the organization of PPC-5 and thanked the organizer of PPC-5 for reducing the registration fee for participants from developing countries.  He reported that the organizing committee of PPC-6 decided to hold the Conference in Gunagzhou from Dec.ember 7-11, 1999.

M. Xu PPC-8 reported that the Chairman of the Organizing Committee was F. Wang, Vice Chairman H. Liu and' M. Xu, Program Committee Chairman M. Xu, Local Committee Chairman D. Jia, Secretarist X. Jin.  He stated that the PPF Council members would form the International Advisory Committee. The first circular was prepared and distributed during the 6th SPSJ International Polymer Conference and PPC-5 and would be distributed during the IUPAC Macro Meeting (Macro 98) in Australia.  He introduced Guangzhou as an old city (2800 years old) but currently the biggest trading and industrial city in south China.  We could visit many historical sites around the city and the weather in December would be fine and warm.  He hoped to meet all the members of the Council in Guangzhou.

PPC-8: S. Tantayanon proposed Thailand, A. Abe said Japan is always ready as the founding member and C.C. Ho proposed Singapore. It was decided to discuss PPC-8 in the next PPF Council Meeting in Australia and C.Y. Kim asked those who had interest in organizing the Conference to prepare a written proposal.

Old Business/New Business: The proposed collaboration with the European Polymer Federation would be discussed in the Council Meeting.  G.A. George mentioned that Stanley Penczek would come to Macro 98 and considered a good opportunity to discuss. O. Vogl suggested to consider having a Polymer Science and the Arts Session in PPC-6.  C.Y. Kim discussed about promoting more participation in PPC and asked the Council Members to put more effort. T. Saegusa suggested to invite the opinion leaders of the polymer industry as the invited speakers.  J.E. McGrath introduced the Biennial Meeting of the Polymer Chemistry Division of ACS which would be held in the year 2000 in December one week before the Pacifichem 2000.

Election of New President/Vice President: F. Wang and T. Ogawa were elected as the President and Vice President of the PPF unanimously.  The term will begin Jan. 1, 1998.
