Councilor's Report: Diana Gerbi

As one of POLY's elected Councilor's I attend the ACS Council Meetings to
represent our Division and to vote on issues important to ACS members. I also
currently serve on the ACS Committee on Meetings and Expositions.

Several items of note were discussed and voted on at the August 25th ACS Council
Meeting in New Orleans. The following petiitons were passed by ACS Council:
a) Society Affiliation with other Technical Organizations: A set of guidelines
which will foster high quality affiliations with other technical societies.
b) Redistricting Plan for Change in Member Population for Defining Regional
Boundaries: To provide equitable representation of member population in each of
six geographic regions for election of Regional Directors.
c) Membership Anniversary Date for New and Reinstated Members: The membership
term will be an inclusive 12-month period. The anniversary date willl be the
date of entry into the active membership role. d) Proposed National Meeting Fee
Structures to Endorse a Long Range Financial Plan with an Amendment that
Precollege Teachers pay the same Fee as Graduate Students: This addresses an ACS
financial policy that national meetings break even over a five year period.
Specific concerns were expressed for the increases in fees for undergraduate
students, graduate students and pre-college teachers. The Committee and Meetings
and Expositions will review the plan annually and report to Council on its
status. Appropriate adjustments to the plan will be made if financial shortfalls
or excesses occur, or if attendance drops in any category of registrants.

At the Committee on Meetings and Expositions meetings the following were
discussed:
a) A great deal of time was spend on the Proposed Fee Structure for National
Meetings (see above).
b) 85 % of the abstracts submitted for the New Orleans meeting were done
electronically; 95 % electronic submission is expected for San Francisco. c) M&E
is offering a new service for training and registration at the Regional
Meetings. Nancy Todd is the Staff contact. d) The policy on retricting
photography at technical events will be updated to include other media.

Please remember that you are invited to observe Council Meetings and attend the
open sessions of the ACS Committees. The schedules are listed with the general
meeting information in C&E News.
