BIOGRAPHY:  Alan R. Hopkins is currently Manager of the Polymers Section in the Macro/Nano Technology Department, Space Materials Laboratory at The Aerospace Corporation, a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) in Los Angeles, California.  He also is an adjunct instructor in the Math and Engineering Department at Long Beach City College.  He received his Ph.D. in Macromolecular Science and Engineering in 1997 from The University of Michigan and his B.S. and A.A.S. degrees in Plastics Engineering and Industrial Chemistry Technology from Ferris State University in 1991.  Prior to joining The Aerospace Corporation, he completed postdoctoral training in the Departments of Chemistry at the California Institute of Technology (1999-2000) and at The University of Florida (1997-98), respectively.  In addition, he worked seven years (1993-97) in the Polymers Department as a research fellow at the General Motors Research & Development Center in Warren, Michigan.   Hopkins’ research interests are in the improvement of electrical conductive polymer nanocomposites through structure/property relationships, understanding and manipulation of single walled carbon nanotubes in solvents for applications in inkjet processing and applications of carbon-based nano-materials for structural and electrical applications.  He has authored/co-authored over 25 publications and has one patent pending.  Dr. Hopkins is currently serving as Alternate Councilor in the American Chemical Society’s Division of Polymer Chemistry and served as Chair of the Membership Committee in 2006.  In addition, he has co-chaired a symposium on "Nanostructured Polymers" at the 2010 ACS National Meeting in San Francisco and has twice served as Chair in 2010 and 2011 of “Carbon Nanotubes for Space Applications Interchange Meeting,” which was sponsored by both Aerospace and the US Air Force Space and Missile System Center.
